Recap of Our Global Health Work in 2024
In 2024, MCD Global Health made significant strides in improving the health and well-being of people around the world. Learn about some of our accomplishments and stories from last year:
Eliminating Malaria
- World Malaria Report response: We addressed the findings of the World Health Organization's 2024 World Malaria Report, reaffirming our commitment to combating malaria globally.
- Advancing malaria research: Our latest studies emphasized the importance of real-time tracking of malaria cases to enable swift responses to outbreaks.
- Bioko Island Malaria Elimination Project study: Research published in the International Journal of Infectious Diseases highlighted that two-thirds of mosquito bites on Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea, may not be preventable with current vector-control tools, underscoring the need for innovative solutions.
Strengthening the Public Health Workforce
- U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention award: We were selected as one of 48 public health organizations nationwide to receive funding from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to bolster public health infrastructure.
- Grant for public health services: We received a five-year, $1 million grant from the CDC to enhance public health systems and services, reinforcing our role in strengthening health infrastructure.
Enhancing Care for People Living with HIV/AIDS
- Since 2023, we've piloted four military health facilities in Gabon, enhancing care quality for people living with HIV/AIDS and promoting differentiated, patient-specific health services.
Expanding Behavioral Health Services
- We secured a five-year, $475,000 per year Technology-enabled Collaborative Learning Program award from the Health Resources and Services Administration to broaden our behavioral health services in the U.S. Northeast.
Improving Oral Health Care
- Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s School Oral Health Program expansion: In the 2023-24 school year, we partnered with additional oral health care providers to extend services to more schools across Maine.
- New resources for oral health care: We introduced the Maine Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) to Independent Practice Dental Hygienist (IPDH) Toolkit, a pioneering resource aimed at improving access to dental care in the state.
- Grant for children's dental care: We were one of 10 national organizations, and the only one in Maine, to receive a CareQuest Institute for Oral Health® grant focused on school-based initiatives to enhance oral health outcomes for children.
Preventing Cervical Cancer
- Our Cervical Cancer and Screening Treatment (CCST) project, funded by Noble Energy EG Ltd (A Chevron Company), in collaboration with Equatorial Guinea’s Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, completed the first-ever pilot vaccination campaign against human papillomavirus (HPV) in the country, marking a significant milestone in cancer prevention.
Preparing for New Leadership
- CEO and President Retiring: After 34 years of dedicated service, MCD CEO and President Dr. Chris Schwabe is retiring in 2025. We are searching for the next CEO and president to lead our mission-driven team.
