MCD Global Health was part of a consortium, led by JSI, that was awarded the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) Uganda Malaria Reduction, funded by USAID — MCD's first project in Uganda.
MCD contributed its experience in diagnostics, case management, strengthening data use for decision making, enhancing integrated community case management, and mentoring private sector facilities, among others.
This activity aimed to improve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of malaria in Uganda with a focus on strengthening the capacity and ownership of malaria prevention at the community and household levels. Overall, this activity contributed to a stronger health system and to the Uganda Ministry of Health’s goal of reducing malaria morbidity and mortality in Uganda by 50% and 75%, respectively, between 2020 and 2025.
Specifically, MCD focused on health system strengthening and malaria diagnosis in the following ways:
- Engaged and leveraged the private sector for increased access to quality malaria services; and
- Strengthened technical capacity and ownership at district, health facility, and community levels for increased sustainability.
Other areas that were focused on by others include:
- Strengthened the capacity of malaria prevention and ownership of health at the community and household levels while maintaining gains made at health facility level in focus districts;
- Supported targeted private for-profit health facilities to improve malaria case management and reporting; and
- Improved technical, managerial, financial, and leadership capacity as well as accountability at different levels of the health care system.
