June 17, 2025

The Maine Public Health Association (MPHA) has awarded MCD Global Health’s CEO and President Chris Schwabe, Ph.D., the Ruth S. Shaper Memorial Award for his significant contributions to public health during the MPHA’s spring awards and networking event on June 12.
The annual award focuses on an individual who has demonstrated a broad orientation to health promotion and disease prevention that extends beyond their specific profession or field of interest.
“I accept this prestigious award on behalf of MCD's U.S. Programs and its longstanding support to Maine's public health programming and improving the health and well-being of Maine's most underserved communities,” Chris said. “The work being done by MPHA, MCD, and other public health organizations and individuals is vital, and it will take the collective creativity and adaptability of all to ensure that Maine's public health needs continue to be met during these exceptionally difficult times.”
Zakiya Sheikh, a community outreach and training coordinator at MCD, nominated Chris because of his 34 years of service to MCD and being a driving force in public health.
“His leadership has been instrumental in advancing MCD’s mission to improve health outcomes worldwide. Throughout his tenure, Chris has worn many hats, from health economist to director of International Programs, and most notably, as the head of the Bioko Island Malaria Elimination Project (BIMEP) for a decade,” she said. “His efforts have contributed significantly to global health initiatives, strengthening health care systems and improving community well-being across the world.”
In addition, Zakiya said that Chris has demonstrated exceptional leadership in navigating complex funding challenges posed by executive orders impacting international programs and is a tireless advocate for MCD’s national and international employees to ensure that the organization remains resilient and fully operational.
As Chris prepares for his well-earned retirement in July 2025, he leaves behind a legacy of innovation, advocacy, and unwavering dedication to the public health field. His impact will be felt for years to come, and his leadership has set a standard for future generations of public health professionals.
