MCD is celebrating Women’s History Month and the International Day of Women this month by highlighting women who work at MCD across different projects, countries, and divisions.

Meet Carolina Amadu Muana, the project manager of the Cervical Cancer Screening and Treatment (CCST) project in Equatorial Guinea since 2017, where she is in charge of all administrative tasks as well as some technical areas.

Below, she describes what the International Day of Women means to her, her journey to MCD, and how MCD has supported her in her career path:

How has working at MCD helped you in your career?

This work has helped me in expanding my knowledge as a health professional, especially in the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of cervical cancer, as it was the first time, I faced these cases that were a novelty for me, especially since my degree was in midwifery.

¿Cómo te ha ayudado el trabajo en MCD en tu carrera?

Este trabajo me ha ayudado mucho en ampliar mis conocimientos como sanitaria sobre todo en la detección, diagnóstico y tratamiento del Cáncer Cervicouterino, ya que era la primera vez que me afrontaba a esos casos que eran una novedad para mi sobre todo en mi titulación como Comadrona.

What would you tell your younger self?

When I start my work at MCDI, sometimes you don't work in what you have studied, but when an opportunity comes your way, you have to make the most of it because, in life, you learn every day. It is not good to say, "I didn't study this so I can't work in it."

¿Qué le dirías a tu yo más joven?

Es una gran oportunidad para mí aprovechar esos conocimientos, al iniciar mi trabajo en MCDI que a veces uno no trabaja en lo que ha estudiado, pero cuando se te presenta alguna oportunidad hay que aprovecharla al máximo ya que en la vida se aprende cada día. Noes bueno decir: “Yo no he estudiado esto así que no puedo trabajar en ello”

Who do you admire or did you admire before?

I admire all of the staff who work on the CCST project team, who work in our clinics who know how to effectively work in conjunction with our hours of operation, as these hours at times can conflict, they never finish work until it is their time. Also, the hard work they do in the rural areas where they perform the test on women who lack the means to travel to the city.

On the other hand, I also admire my managers who are the management, in both Equatorial Guinea and the home office, because they solve my doubts without waiting every time I go to them.

¿A quién admiras o admirabas antes?

Admiro a todo mi equipo de CCST que trabaja en nuestros consultorios al saber compaginar su horario de trabajo y el nuestro, ya que estas horas a veces les coinciden pero nunca cierran el consultorio si no ha llegado su hora de salida. Y también x el duro trabajo que realizan en las zonas rurales realizando la prueba a esas mujeres que carecen de medios para llagar a la ciudad. Por otra parte también admiro a mis jefes inmediatos que son la directiva, tanto Guinea Ecuatorial como en Home Office, porque resuelven mis dudas sin esperar cada vez que acudo a ellos.

Describe any barriers you overcame throughout your life and describe your career path and how you came to be at MCD.

I have overcome several barriers throughout my life, but the one that incited me the most was having to leave my 1-year-old daughter to get a scholarship in Morocco. I did not know what to choose: Stay and take care of my child, or attend the scholarship, but, in the end, I opted for the scholarship in order to seek the livelihood of my beloved daughter.

I spent three years studying far away from her, which was worrying although she remained in the charge of my parents, but I completed my studies in three years and returned to the country to work while being with her.

Describa cualquier barrera que haya superado a lo largo de su vida y describa su trayectoria profesional y cómo llegó a MCD.

He superado varias barreras a lo largo de mi vida pero la que más me incitó fue la de tener que dejar a mi hija de 1 año de edad por conseguir una beca de estudios en Marruecos, no sabía que elegir, quedarme a cuidar a mi niña o ir a atender la beca de estudios, pero al final opte por la beca para buscar el sustento de mi querida hija, pase tres años estudiando muy Lejos de ella cosa que inquietaba aunque se quedó a cargo de mis padres; pero supere mi carrera en tres años y volví al país a trabajar a lado de ella.

What advice did you receive early on in your career that you found most helpful?

The greatest advice I received was from my Moroccan professors who told me: "You have to master your profession well in theory and especially in practice because, in your country, you may be sent to work in a place where there are no specialist doctors and will have to solve all the cases that come to you."

I listened well to that advice, and always remembered it while studying. I got very good results, and my second work destination was in a small district where there were no gynecologists where I attended all the cases of gynecology and obstetrics that came to that hospital.

¿Qué consejo recibió al principio de su carrera que le resultó más útil?

El Mayor consejos fue el de mis Profesores Marroquíes que siempre me decían: “ Tienes que dominar bien tu profesión en la teoría y sobre todo en la práctica porque pueda que en tu país te manden a trabajar en un lugar donde no hay médicos especialista y tu tendrás que resolver todos los casos que te lleguen” Entonces yo atendí bien a ese consejo y siempre lo recordaba mientras estudiaba y conseguí muy buenos resultados, y justamente mi segundo destino de trabajo fue en un pequeño distrito donde no habían médicos Ginecólogos y yo atendía todos los casos de Ginecoobstetricia que llegaban a este hospital.

Describe any accomplishments that you are most proud of.

In principle, I am very proud of my profession as a health professional and especially being a midwife for those children who I helped bring into the world. I am proud to have added another complementary experience in my professional life, specifically in the administrative part, thanks to my great family of MCDI.

Describa los logros de los que se sienta más orgullosa.

En Principio me orgullece mucho mi profesión como sanitaria y sobre todo al ser comadrona por esos niños que ayudo a traer al mundo, completo mi orgullo por haber añadido en vida profesional otra experiencia complementaria en la parte administrativa gracias a mi gran familia de MCDI.

What does International Women’s Day/Women’s History Month mean to you? Describe how you feel about this year’s theme of Break the Bias along with what you think can be done to accomplish this?

International Women's Day/Women's History Month is celebrated annually every March to honor women's participation in history, culture, society, and their full development as individuals on an equal footing with men. It is commemorated annually on March 8.

Regarding this year's theme "Breaking Prejudice": A woman must be submissive, stand up, and face any kind of problem that comes her way, fight until she can overcome it without depending too much on men or being self-conscious in front of them.

Many times, women are unable to break barriers due to injustices and discrimination when they are treated differently or inferior without reason or justification because of their ethnic, social, political, religious, etc., group. That is why it is necessary to break all barriers that prevent women to develop, go out, and achieve their goal, their dream without causing any harm to others.

¿Qué significa para usted el Día Internacional de la Mujer/Mes de la Historia de la Mujer? Describa su opinión sobre el tema de este año, "Rompe los prejuicios", y lo que cree que se puede hacer para lograrlo.

El día Internacional de la mujer/Mes de la historia de la mujer; se celebra anualmente cada mes de Marzo para honrar la participación de las mujeres a la historia, a la cultura, en la sociedad y al desarrollo íntegro como persona en pie de igualdad con el hombre. Se conmemora cada día 08 de Marzo.

Respecto al tema de este año “Rompe perjuicios”.

La mujer debe ser sumisa, ponerse en pie y afrontar cualquier tipo de problema que se la presente, luchar hasta poder superarlo sin depender mucho de los hombres ni acomplejarse ante ellos.

Muchas veces la mujer suele ser incapaz de romper algunas barreras por causa de las injusticias y discriminación cuando se la da un trato diferente o de inferioridad sin motivo ni justificación debido a su grupo étnico, social, político, religioso, etc. Por eso es preciso romper todas esas barreras que impiden a las mujeres desenvolverse, salir y sacar adelante su objetivo, su sueño sin causar ningún daño al prójimo.
